Susan grew up in Atlanta, the daughter of a congressman. Roped into unpaid campaigning as a teenager, she learned how to translate political issues into everyday conversation with voters, and to engage in empathy and the performance art of public speaking. Her father may have made her shake hands with his opponents when she didn’t want to, which taught her civility and grace. Okay, she’s still working on these.

She brings a unique perspective to her audiobook work, with a B.A. in Theatre and Performance Studies, from NYU, and a M.A. in Folklore and Folklife. She has performed on stage, starting when she was fourteen, with Plays for Living, touring for several years in the play Mirror, Mirror portraying a teenage mother. She has appeared in film, as the First Class Flight Attendant in Last Holiday, opposite Queen Latifah, and as Julian Sands’ deceased wife in flashbacks in The Scoundrels’ Wife. As a voiceover professional for over 20 years, her voice can be heard at such places as the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and on your voicemail, reminding you of your dentist appointment.

As a professional folklorist, Susan has conducted hundreds of oral histories across the U.S. for the Smithsonian Institution and several state agencies, with everyone from railroad conductors and cowboy poets to blues musicians and Mardi Gras float builders. She has listened to and interpreted these cultural stories into award winning documentary films, festival presentations, and a book.
